Project Overview

A Future-State Product Vision

  • The Problem: Netflix risks losing Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences to short-form platforms like TikTok and YouTube, driven by a shift toward quick, mobile-first engagement.

  • The Strategy: A future-state vision (Vision 2035) that shifts Netflix from a passive content library to a "Creatorverse"—an active ecosystem for creator-led storytelling.

  • The Solution: "Quick Binge"—a mobile-first, short-form feed designed not just for entertainment, but as a strategic funnel to drive viewers toward long-form Originals.

Focal Issue

Retaining the Next Generation of Viewers

Netflix continues to lead long-form, subscription-based streaming, but the entertainment landscape is rapidly evolving. Short-form platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are reshaping how younger audiences discover and consume content.

This project explores a central strategic question: How can Netflix stay competitive and retain Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences over the next 5–10 years?

Key signals driving this shift:

  • Platform penetration: YouTube (89.3%) and TikTok (71.2%) exceed Netflix (67.9%) among U.S. Gen Z users

  • Behavior change: Shorter attention spans and a preference for mobile-first, bite-sized content over long viewing sessions

  • Engagement gap: Short-form platforms outperform streaming on daily active usage

Netflix Quick Binge: Vision 2035, Design Fiction

This video visualizes the "Creatorverse" scenario—a future where Netflix transforms into a launchpad for the next generation of storytellers.

Driving Forces

Strategic Foresight & Uncertainty Mapping

To understand the broader system shaping Netflix’s future, I analyzed key trends and forces influencing the streaming and creator economy.

Key Drivers:

I analyzed "predetermined forces" (like the rise of mobile consumption) against "uncertain forces." The two most critical uncertainties defined the strategic landscape:

The Scenario Matrix

Intersecting the two uncertainties produced four plausible futures for Netflix’s short-form strategy:

Why "Creatorverse"?

I selected the Creatorverse scenario as the primary directive because it offers the highest growth potential, despite introducing operational complexity.

Outcome & Reflection

This project demonstrates how Scenario Planning can de-risk product innovation. By identifying the "Creatorverse" future, I moved beyond a simple UI redesign to a fundamental business model shift transforming Netflix from a passive library into an active launchpad for the next generation of storytellers.
